3rd Annual RIIS Memorial Walk 4 The Children
July 27, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
3rd Annual Memorial Walk for the children will be hosted by Saskatchewan Missing, RIIS Commerative Association & RIIS Media Project. RIIS is Regina Indian Industrial School. Many First Nations children attended the school from across Saskatchewan.
The 3rd annual walk will be meeting at Sakimay gas station on the west end of Regina and will walk down Pinkie Rd to the cemetery.
Regina Indian Industrial School forcefully educated First Nations’ children from 1890 until shutting down in 1910. The building became a municipal jail and boys’ detention centre before burning down in 1948.
The memorial walk is to honor & respect our children that are buried here in unmarked graves. To give them recognition & to protect this site. Approx 40 children are buried in unmark graves within the fence. We are the protectors & the need to give the gravesite recognition is a priority. We can only imagine the heartache a mother went through when their child was ripped from their mothers arms to attend this school far away only to disappear and be buried here because it was too costly for the church to send them home to their loving family and be buried the right way.
Lets never forget our children that lay here forever.
Come out and support. Bring flowers & teddy bears for the children. Prayer & feast will follow. Bring tea lights(battery operated) to put around the fence.
